Accelerating Foreign Language Fluency of Filipino Nurses and Caregivers

There are many reasons why Filipino nurses and caregivers are valued all over the world. They are known for their compassion and care for their patients. They are also known for their dedication to their work and their willingness to work long hours. Another reason is that Filipino nurses and caregivers have a high level of education and training. Finally, Filipino nurses and caregivers are known for their positive attitude and their willingness to help others. These qualities make them an asset to any healthcare facility.

Filipino nurses and caregivers have high proficiency in English because that language is the medium of instruction in their home country. This proficiency has been an asset when migrating to North America and the UK. However, Filipinos struggle when learning other languages needed for them to be productive in non-English countries such as Japan.

Traditional Teaching Methods

In the traditional approach of teaching a second language, the teacher uses a textbook as the primary source of material, and the students learn grammar and vocabulary from this book. They also learn to read and write and practice in the foreign language.

This has been the way most students are prepared to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test for nurses and caregivers. However, many students do not develop the fluency and confidence to communicate with native speakers because they have limited time to practice with fluent speakers on everyday topics which are interesting to them. Immersion to the target language and culture is the key to developing a level of fluency in the language.

Technology Can Help

It should be no surprise that conversing in a new language, as often as possible, is the fastest way to become fluent and confident in that language. However nurses and caregivers while outside the native country of that language, have limited opportunities to intensively practice because there are few native speakers available to converse with them.

This is the area where recent advances in technology can greatly help. Today’s advances in artificial intelligence, specifically in natural language processing, make it possible to create conversational robots, popularly known as “chatbots”, to provide continuous practice to students accessible 24 hours, seven days a week. Even when the student has relocated to the target country, advances in speech-to-speech real-time translation make it possible for a student with only beginner level in the new language to converse with native speakers at a high level, which greatly accelerates their progress when they already have solid foundation in the language’s grammar.

About Enterpreta

Enterpreta is a division of Smetrix Fixed Income Partners, Inc., a Philippine based technology company. Enterpreta is a leader in the use of natural language processing, a field of artificial intelligence, to accelerate the development of foreign language fluency for Filipino nurses and caregivers seeking employment in Japan and other foreign countries.

Enterpreta has developed a pair of mobile apps one for a caregiver/nurse speaking in Filipino and a senior/patient speaking in Japanese that will allow them to conduct a real time voice conversation with each other while speaking in their own language. The student is able to see in real time the Japanese translation of what he or she said as well as see the translation of what was answered by the senior or patient. This immersive experience accelerates the expansion of the students' Japanese vocabulary.

AI-Enabled Video Practice Session

Every language instructor knows that practice is essential for students to learn a new language. When students practice speaking, reading, writing, and listening to the language, they become more comfortable and confident in using it. Practicing with a native speaker is essential. However, native speakers may not always be available due to their work, family, or other commitments. This can make it challenging and costly to find the services of a consistent practice partner.

Enterpreta's new app, the Practice Room, available initially for Android devices, solves this problem. The app provides a zoom-like live video conference experience for students to practice with each other while in the comfort of their home, school or office.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, students can alternate in the role of native speaker while engaging other co-students to converse with them. Those other students can then listen, understand, speak and read in the new language. Students take turns playing the role of native speaker. They do this by speaking in their native language, for example English or Filipino, but which is heard by the other students in the new language with the correct pronunciation.

Practice Makes Perfect

Enterpreta is also developing AI-enabled apps to train Filipino speakers to say their thoughts in Japanese, by generating sentences in Filipino language appropriate for the student's level. The student will then be shown a series of words in scrambled order which represents the translation of the Filipino sentence into Japanese. The student will then have to re-arrange the order of the Japanese words so that it is a gramatically correct translation of the original sentence. The sentences start off as beginner level, but as the student gains proficiency, the sentences become more complex to progressively challenge the student.
